History

Settled in 1889 when the land was known as “unassigned,” the area was part of the famous “Land Run.” Homesteaders numbering around 10,000 made a dash to stake out land that would become the capital of Oklahoma. It grew quickly, the population doubling in ten years and by the time Oklahoma was admitted to the Union in 1907, it had passed the territorial capital of Guthrie and shortly after the capital was indeed moved to Oklahoma City.

Before WWII, Oklahoma City developed major stockyards and with the 1928 discovery of oil within the city limits, it became a major center of oil production. Oklahoma City has passed a redevelopment package to revive its downtown area, adding a new baseball park and central library as well as renovations to the civic center, convention center and fairgrounds.
