History

Originally homesteaded by James Dean, who made the Unassigned Land Run in April of 1889, the farm became the property of Dr. E.H. Long after James Dean's death in 1899. Dr. E. H. Long was both a doctor and an attorney. In 1903, Dr. Long had a quarter section of land laid out for a town and the local newspaper reported, “The townsite of Piedmont is one of the prettiest in Oklahoma.”

In spite of the first blush of activity in 1903, the town truly prospered with the coming of the St. Louis-El Reno-Western Railroad in 1904. At that time, lots were auctioned off along the railroad owned right of way and the first train arrived in Piedmont on New Year’s Day in 1904. Settlers who had located outside of Piedmont hurried to move closer to the railroad and joined other merchants to form the town by actually moving their business structures. In November of 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt signed Oklahoma’s statehood Proclamation, making it the 46th state of the union.

Incorporating in 1909, between the years of 1903 and 1910, local businesses included a newspaper, bank, doctor’s office and many other stores needed to help a thriving town continue to grow. Between the years of 1950 and 1970, the population increased by 124% and while there were fewer farms, the ones that existed were large farms. Oil and gas activities showed gains as well. Today, the City of Piedmont is located near the geographical center of Oklahoma, barely a hop, skip and a jump away from Oklahoma City, covering 47 square miles.
