History
Kingfisher was founded on April 22, 1889 when the federal government opened land on the Chisholm Trail to settlers. The land was originally used to herd millions of Texas longhorns to railheads in the years following the Civil War. Today the history of the Chisholm Trail lives on through the Chisholm Trail Museum.
In 1958, the Kingfisher County Development Foundation was formed to help assist and promote industrial, economic and civic growth for Kingfisher and the surrounding areas. The Kingfisher County Development Foundation is still in use today helping to benefit its merchants, city, schools, hospital and citizens.
